Batman – A look at the Caped Crusaders Costumes Throughout the Years
When it comes to superhero's they don't get bigger or badder than the one and only Batman! He's the Dark Knight, the caped crusader.... Bruce Wayne to his nearest and dearest. He's the protector of Gotham City and has feuds with some of the most iconic villains ever created. Come with us on a journey through the years, where we look at some of our favourite Batman costumes for men, women and kids... Just in time for the new Batman movie release!
Adam West - Batman TV Show
Batman first burst on to our screens in the 60's, in what is now considered a cult classic TV show. Starring Adam West as Batman, this series was outrageous and over the top but still managed to capture the hearts of viewers around the world. The original Batman costume worn by Adam West was bright blue with grey details. He had a black cape and cowl, with a yellow Batman symbol on his chest.
Michael Keaton - Batman & Batman Returns
Next up, we have Michael Keaton as Batman in the Tim Burton classic Batman movies from the late 80's/early 90's. These movies were much darker than the TV series, and showed Batman as a more serious superhero. The costume was designed by Bob Ringwood and was made to look like a cross between Batman's original costume and a medieval knight. It had chainmail sleeves, a molded chest piece, and black leather pants. The cape was also quite long and flowing.
Val Kilmer - Batman Forever
Batman Forever brought us a new Batman, in the form of Val Kilmer. This costume was designed by Bob Ringwood and was made to be more form-fitting than the previous costumes. It was also brighter, with blue details on the chest piece and yellow highlights on the gloves and boots.
George Clooney - Batman and Robin
The next Batman costume was that of George Clooney in Batman and Robin. This costume was incredibly unpopular with fans, and is often considered to be the worst Batman movie ever made. The bright blue and silver suit was very over-the-top and didn't quite fit with the darker tone of the previous Batman movies.
Christian Bale - Dark Knight Trilogy
In Christian Bales Dark Knight trilogy, we see a much more tactical Batman. The costume is designed by Lindy Hemming and is made from a material called Nomex. This is a fire resistant material which Batman needs as he often finds himself in very dangerous situations! The costume is also bullet proof and has many different pockets and compartments for Batman to store his gadgets.
Ben Affleck - Dawn of Justice
The most recent Batman movie is Dawn of Justice, where Batman is played by Ben Affleck. This costume was designed by Michael Wilkinson and is very similar to the one worn by Christian Bale in the Dark Knight trilogy. It is made from a mixture of Kevlar and Nomex, and is again bullet proof. It also has a cooling system which helps Ben Affleck to stay cool while wearing the suit!
Arkham Knight - Video Game
Finally, we have Batman's newest incarnation in the Arkham Knight video game. This costume was designed by Rocksteady Studios and is heavily inspired by Batman's suit from the comics. It is made from a mixture of Kevlar and Nomex, and is covered in Batman's signature Bat symbols.
