2018 Talk Like A Pirate Day
International Talk Like A Pirate Day - September 19th
Ahoy, me hearties! International Talk Like A Pirate Day is almost upon ye, and so now is the perfect opportunity to grab that swashbuckling, sea-faring pirate costume ye’ve been eyeing off and wear it with pride as all yours “R”s become “Aarrrrr”s and rum becomes your new drink of choice.
But why pirates? This day originated in 1995 from an inside joke between two friends, Cap’n Slappy and Ol’ Chumbucket, from the USA, who would slip into pirate vernacular when getting injured in the very pirate-y game of racquetball, and soon decided to set aside one day a year in which they would honour the noble language of these roguish sailors. Word soon spread of this day, thanks to growing media coverage, and more and more people decided to pick up their eyepatches and hold hook hands for one day a year, in honour of various famous romanticised pirates from the Golden Age of Piracy, such as Long John Silver from Treasure Island, and Blackbeard.
Now this day has grown into the fun unofficial holiday we all know and love. And if you would like to take your pirate pride that step further, why not grab a captain’s hat and cutlass and accentuate your pirate costumes or even your office attire? Or go full-pirate and grab a whole pirate fancy dress costume plus shoulder parrot? However you want to celebrate International Talk Like A Pirate Day, we’ve got you covered.
